Master Carver James “Doc” Hansel

Internationally acclaimed and widely respected in the world of wildfowl carving, Dr. James “Doc” Hansel achieved the rare distinction of master carver. Known simply as “Doc” to those close to him, Hansel brought the same precision and artistry to carving that defined his career in orthodontics. When he retired in the 1980s, carving became his full-time passion—and the results were nothing short of extraordinary.

Doc was honored as Washington State Carver of the Year an impressive seven times by Ducks Unlimited and earned numerous first-place ribbons at International Wildfowl Carving Association (IWCA) competitions. An avid outdoorsman and lifelong hunter, his deep love for nature inspired carvings that were as lifelike as they were beautiful.

Beyond awards and accolades, Doc used his talent for a greater cause—raising more than $150,000 for wildlife conservation through Ducks Unlimited by donating over 100 original carvings.

This gallery showcases some of Doc Hansel’s most celebrated works—each a tribute to craftsmanship, conservation, and the wild beauty that inspired him.

A Pacific Northwest native, “Doc” was born in Vancouver, Washington and attended Oregon State University as an undergraduate. He served in the U.S. Army, then later attended Dental School at the University of Washington. Eventually, he graduated from Marquette University in Orthodontics and soon after started his own practice in Poulsbo, Washington. While he carved decoys when working, he was able to give carving his full attention after retirement. Many times fellow decoy collectors and artists would commission “Doc” to carve a decoy for their personal collection. Often, his carvings sold for as much as $5,000.
